Eight More Planets???

Swiss scientists have found what might be eight huge planets outside our solar system. Three of the new planets are believed to be the size of Saturn and five are the size of Jupiter.

 

Wildfires Blaze in New Mexico

More than 22,000 people have had to leave their homes in New Mexico because of fires that have blazed out of control. The National Park Service started the fires to clear brush at the Sandelier National Monument.

Stanley Cup Conference Finals Ready to Roll

The Colorado Avalanche and the Dallas Stars will compete for the western conference title. The New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia Flyers will compete for the eastern conference title. The winner of each conference title will go on to compete against each other for the Stanley Cup.

Golf Tournament Heats Up in Texas

Davis Love III and Blaine McCallister share the first-round lead in the Byron Nelson Classic to conclude this weekend. Others participating in the tournament include Tiger Woods.

Two Major League Pitchers That Do Their Jobs Well

Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Pedro Martinez of the Boston Red Sox are not bothered by all the talk about too many homeruns and “juiced” baseballs. These two pitchers shut down powerhouse hitters. Randy Johnson’s ERA is 0.95 and he has a record of 7-0. Pedro Martinez’s ERA is 1.22 and his record is 5-1. Pedro’s only loss so far was a 1-0 game.

Olympic News

The Olympic torch that will carry the flame to the Sydney Olympic Games was ignited in a ceremony on May 9th.

NHL players will be allowed to play in the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. At the last Olympics in Nagano, Japan, the United States team embarrassed the NHL by trashing their hotel rooms after they were eliminated from the tournament.

Cyclist Lance Armstrong is recovering from a slight concussion he received in a train crash in the Pyrenees Mountains.

U.S. men’s volleyball team began a four-match series against Australia with a victory May 8th. U.S. women’s volleyball team earned a victory over Japan. Both teams are getting ready for the Sydney Olympic games.

Tommy Lasorda, 20-year former manager of the Los Angeles Dodger and a Hall of Fame manager, was selected to manage the United States Olympic baseball team for 2000.
